Bad breakups have had all of us on the ropes, and The Duchess of Cambridge is no exception. It turns out she’s had quite the dating history before she met Prince William, including to someone who left her completely heartbroken. Kate used to date a man called Harry Blakelock whilst at school.
Her relationship with Harry allegedly lasted a year, and according to Katie Nicholl’s biography of Kate, they “both agreed they wanted to make the relationship work,” despite the pressures of exams. She added: “But then Harry decided he’d take a gap year and travel around the world and decided to break up with her, leaving her “heartbroken”.”
They never resumed their relationship but Kate was left so gutted she didn’t date anyone else for the two years until she met her knight in shining armour. But the Cambridges managed to put any hard feelings to one side and invited Harry to their wedding, since he was married to Kate’s good friend, Sarah Follett. She also enjoyed a short spell with famous reporter Willem Marx at her prestigious Wiltshire boarding school, Marlborough. Although nothing came of it, they remained good friends and were spotted leaving Boujis nightclub in South Kensington back in 2007.
Willem, who studied Classics at Oxford University and has been a correspondent for CBS News, was also invited to the 2011 royal wedding. He now has a son with his Italian television presenter wife, Johanna Botta.Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship began at university in 2001 when they were both students in residence at St Salvator’s Hall at the University of St Andrews. They began dating in 2003 and were engaged by 2010 despite a short spell apart in 2007.Twelve years later they’re now set to be the future monarchs and share three kids.
